Ringed Turtle Dove -- Streptopelia risoria
I was surprised to see one of these yesterday. First I thought it was an oddly coloured mourning dove, because it was hanging out with one, but I got a closer look and it was definitely a ringed turtle dove. These guys are domesticated doves with no analogue in North America, so it took a bit to identify, but I found several references to feral populations in cities across the US, so I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised we have them feral here as well.
Been reviewing my birding post and am correcting some glaring omissions.
When have I *not* seen these wonderful creatures?
Common Raven -- Corvus corax
The most important bird on my list, from a personal standpoint. My primary totem, despite the fact that it's not native to anywhere I've ever lived (at least not anymore). I saw a few when I was in Albuquerque for a conference. Significantly, I saw three of them circle the wolf habitat (wolf is my secondary totem) while at a wildlife preserve. I've also heard their call several times while at my aunt's place in the Appalachians, but I never managed to see them while there.
I saw a whole gaggle this morning. In addition to both morphs of snow goose (shown below), there were Canada geese, and one that looked to be a hybrid with some domestic species. All travelling together. Isn't diversity grand?!
Pretty cool! I didn't even know that albino squirrels exist. read more
